500w RMS beast for sale. Makes your leg hairs vibrate and gives that gooey inside feeling when you're close. If you're going to compare it to cheap chinese tat, compare it to the 1kw+ rated subs. Specs wise this is a custom built box with a true 450W of RMS power at 0.005% THD.
It can be pushed beyond this before distortion is audible. The amp module is a 450W BK Electronics UK made mosfet powered beast that, according to the internet, will simply never die. That said, if you blow it, whoops. Since I never used them hard I stripped the fan off- obviously replace that if you need the full 450w. I got two amps and boxes from someone that had designed boxes with a port far too short and too small, so I simply hacked off the bottom of the box, shoved a big big port in and threw the cheapest drivers I could find in, and viola, extreme neighbour annoyance for bargain dollah.I actually used these at my wedding. It's 57cm, long, 50cm tall, and 47cm wide. It weighs a predictable luggage scale breaking amount, maybe 40kg? It's a semi comfortable 1 man lift. I wouldn't want to walk more than 100m with it.
Honestly I wouldn't want to walk anywhere with it, but you know what I mean. The hole at the top is 35mm diameter which is a pretty annoying non standard size as far as I can tell. Power is supplied with a powercon cable, I have a long one (between 5 and 10m) which I'll chuck in as I don't need it once this is gone. Upstream of the power amp is an lm2596 voltage regulator feeding an NE5532 based preamp which gives it the gain it needs to really hit. The 2596 was actually unnecessary, I was chasing some background buzz, so you can get rid of it if you like.
If that means nothing to you- don't worry. It won't be as loud as this though, I promise. Again, this is a true 450w RMS and can apparently be pushed much further before distortion becomes audible. Most of those 1kw rated subs will handle a peak of 1kw for 0.001 seconds before running back to their mummies scared.Regarding the buzz, I did manage to make it mostly go away by tweaking the trim pot in the middle of the amp. It's the only trim pot on the board so, there you go.
It's pretty quiet now. It would be annoying if it were next to you in a library (Assuming the volume was turned down- if it were up, it would get you kicked out before the song drops, sadly), but if you put it next to a fridge and walked 10 paces you'd struggle to know whether the sub was on or off.
Just to clarify the buzz is a power amp buzz and is there regardless of volume level. Also adding the lm2596/ne5532 introduced a massive power off thump. It's kinda fun so long as you don't do gigs for the military. There are a couple of holes at the back- notably the XLR and jack connections. These do chuff a bit but really, if you can hear that, turn it up already.
Regarding sound quality- it's a 500w RMS sub that goes deep and hits hard. It's loud enough to make Karens cry and the world rattle.
Feel free to join a load of local facebook groups and run this thing for a few minutes then watch the posts about illegal raves roll in. There are probably better subs to pick if you're watching a film- but equally it's not a flabby 1 note wonder- it's actually very musical IMO. If you're looking for a bass amp, illegal rave machine or an ASBO- this will do perfectly. If you want the most ridiculously ridiculous bass in your home cinema, then this works too. Basically, as long as you're looking for loud bass, the possibilities are pretty much endless. This is a wonderful amp- but it is old. Everything looks good on the amp module apart from 1 resistor which is a bit discoloured- but that should be easily fixed if ever required with a simple resolder of one rated for a higher wattage. I genuinely expect it to give years of good service- but I can't guarantee that. So satisfy yourself that you'll be happy with the box, woofer and transformer should anything happen to the module. That said the woofer isn't very special.
The second has had several hundred maybe even thousand hours of quiet usage with no issues- again with the fan stripped out. If you intend it to give it heavy usage then fit a fan.
You get in by removing the driver from the front and then you can pull everything else out, I sealed the handles etc on with foam tape to stop air leaks. Any questions get in touch.
